Some of the delegates taking part on REE's EMS Club

Local companies came together to learn how to develop their own Environmental Management System for ISO 14001, a recognised standard for environmental procedures. The course highlighted skills to implement environmental practices into their businesses. A series of sessions came to an end this December after 6 months study and class workshops. Taking part in the training were Day & Night PAT Testing, BJ Builders, GTS Ventilation and Eat Lunch. Also in the photograph are Antony Gough, Programme Manager for Resource Efficiency East and Paul Burr of WYG who delivered the training.

Tempered Air Made Simple

Tempering air using Electric Heater Batteries (EHB’s) with Thyristor built-in controls might seem expensive, but the simplicity and convenience of installation can offset the additional unit cost and result in good value for money overall. EHB’s with built in thyristor controls come complete and ready to run. The simplified installation process reduces the amount of cabling required and, because it is straight forward, there is also less risk of costly installation mistakes.

Manufactured by Neatafan, who have a wealth of experience in producing products for the HVAC industry, the heaters sold by GTS are available with standard ratings from 1kw to 100kw, or specials up to 500kw. The thyristor unit used to regulate them (built-in up to 22.5kw) is an in-house development produced to satisfy the demand for better control.

Environmental Management System

I have recently been attending as a delegate an Environmental Management Systems club. The aim of the group is to work through the process of obtaining ISO14001 accreditation. This means objectively looking through all of the company procedures and systems to see where energy savings can be made, and where we can find opportunities to promote our range of products that can help others have greater efficiencies in their buildings and offices.

There are a number of products available from our warehouse. In particular we have an Eco Diffuser - the perfect product to help circulate air around a room to eliminate hot or/and cold areas. This is a high induction radial air patterned circular ceiling diffuser which can operate automatically or be set manually for either heating or cooling.

This remarkable series of diffusers assists greatly in the efficiency of heating systems to achieve optimum room conditions, automatically directing a portion of the supply air vertically when the supply air temperature is above 30°C. When the supply air temperature is below 24°C the diffuser automatically directs the supply air horizontally across the ceiling.

This product is very simple to install, designed with an integrated clamping system to enable fast installation in either ceiling tiles or plaster board ceilings. The packaging is fully recyclable and even contains a template to ensure the correct size fixing hole is cut.

The image below shows how the air is distributed... worth considering when your workers are complaining about the cold when the heating is bolting out a neat 23 degrees C.

When you review your energy usage, lighting and heating are both important and adding some thought to some of the less obvious can save you around 10% on your energy bills.

Writing an Environment Policy

With so much in the news surrounding 'green' thinking, we thought it was about time to re-visit our Environment Policy, to revitalise it & make it much more appropriate to where we are and where we are heading.

This new thinking is partly because we are undertaking aligning our processes for ISO 14001 accrediation and as a key factor of this activity a re-look at our committment is essential.

Originally we had a few generic thoughts such as "we will recycle as much as possible" but now we are committed & can say that we will be compliant! A much stronger phrase and sentiment that everyone here can believe in & a focus that the whole company can envisage.

So what are we saying? With a little pre-amble about who we are and what we do, we then have penned a few gritty bullet points:

GTS has been distributing ventilation equipment from all the major manufacturers in the ventilation industry since 1987. During that time we have become known within the industry as being a company which can be relied upon. GTS has formed close working relationships with both customers and suppliers which enable the company to provide a first class service and quick response when required.

GTS’ responsibility to the environment is to reduce the company’s impact by preventing pollution and waste and continually improving processes to minimise environmental impact.

GTS will deliver the goals through the following objectives:
·         Ensure compliance with legal and other requirements relevant to the business.
·         Maximise the use of renewable energy and only use offsetting as a last resort.
·         Reduce fuel usage through efficient driving and transport use.
·         Monitor and reduce its carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency.
·         Work, where possible, with local businesses to reduce travel miles.
·         Switch off electrical equipment when not required.
·         Use recycled or sustainable paper products.
·         Follow the philosophy of Reduce, Reuse & Recycle.
·         Review this Environmental Policy at least every 12 months.

GTS is managing the environmental process through an Environmental Management System based on ISO 14001.

This policy is promoted to staff, suppliers and customers and is included in the company’s Employee Handbook.

When reading this all through it all seems quite 'light' but the work done behind the scenes to make sure that we can actually achieve what we say we can manage has been a small challenge - nothing that any company worth it's salt should balk at.

Moving forward, we are on a continuous improvement growth plan, embracing eco thinking and pickign up the benefits such as greater sales of our energy efficient product range as well as the savings we'll enjoy through being more efficient.

Policies may seem on the face of it to be a waste of time, but in reality they are a vehicle to help focus the business on its core philosophies to help build a cohesive and sustainable growth strategy.

This is a new venture at GTS Vent, moving into the new era of digital publishing and social media. We created a website when everyone else did and we are still keeping up the changes - we now have a new website and a Linkedin Account.
